Do's And Don't's for High School Freshman

Hey y'all!

I'm finally a senior in high school. As cliche as this sounds, it feels like it was just yesterday that I was a freshman. I can thankfully say that I have made it this far and I am ecstatic to be graduating in less than a year now.

Throughout my entire high school career, I have learned very important lessons (good and bad), but I really wish someone had told/warned me about certain things. I've compiled a list of a few things that I believe every student should know before they graduate high school.

LIFESTYLE }

✓ DO get lots of sleep : waking up early for school is one of the most dreadful experiences about high school. As much as we all love Pinterest, it can wait! Make sure to get all of your zzz’s (about 6 - 8 hours a night).

DO eat healthy : okay so I might be a bit hypocritical here because I eat Chick-fil-A pretty much every day for lunch and I drink diet coke like it’s going out of style, but eating healthy and keeping fit makes you feel so much better. You’ll have more energy throughout the entire day, which is beneficial to keep you awake during math class.

SOCIAL LIFE }

DO get involved : join clubs, play sports, or even be a part of student council! It’s a great way to hang out with friends and meet new people.

DO be yourself : Being popular may seem important, but it’s not. It’s not bad to have a lot of friends, but don’t strive to be someone you’re not.

DON’T feel pressured :If you feel uncomfortable in any situation, don’t just sit around and wait for someone else to intervene. Do something about it. Whether that be leaving a party or saying no to drinking and driving, it doesn’t make you look stupid. Saying no is so much better than “FOMO”.

ACADEMICS }

DO work hard : This was something I struggled with a majority of high school. I didn’t really take my grades seriously. Keep in mind that from the day you start freshman year, YOUR GPA MATTERS. So do your homework and study for tests. You’ll be thankful you did once you get a full ride to your dream college.

DO apply early for colleges : it allows time for all of the kinks to be worked out of your application. Plus it means you’ll get back the decision sooner!

DON’T be afraid to ask for help : take advantage of tutoring opportunities if your school offers it. Start a study group with your friends so that you’ll actually want to go. Struggling with a class doesn’t make you stupid, but not doing anything about it does.

Just remember that although high school may seem like it has just started, it really is only a small four year part of your life. So make the most out of it and enjoy it! It'll be gone before you know it.
